From September to December 2012, second year Advertising & Marketing Communications students pulled out all the stops to create innovative concepts, including mock ads and radio spots, for a full media ad campaign and media plan for the Municipality of Powassan, a small town on the outskirts of North Bay, Ontario.
To generate media coverage for both the campaign and themselves, students used social media, writing tweets and blog posts to catalogue the process of building the campaign.
Our efforts generated a LOT of media coverage -- radio interviews and news articles appeared for months, both before and after the big presentation to dignitaries from the college and Powassan community and council. Powassan generously offered 2 bursaries to reward student efforts.
The chosen campaign featured casual, colourful drawings of members of a 'Powassan family', conceived of and drawn by Patrick Head; these 'familes' were printed and appeared in a life-size display at the 2013 Powassan Maple Syrup Festival (where Rick Mercer appeared!) in the spring of 2013. Visitors took pictures of themselves and tweeted or posted their photos to Facebook.
