Teaching in Dominican Republic will forever be an experience that I will never forget.
Last week during my final week of classes I had the opportunity through Canadore Residence to be involved in a service-learning trip to Dominican Republic and teach the children of the Monte Cristi area to speak English.
During my time at Maria Altagracia public school, I was teaching grade one through five about the different rooms of the house and how to say them in English. I was amazed to see how fast the children were learning the words and the actions for them. Each day we worked with different groups of students inside the classroom so we were able to work with all the students by the end of the week.
One girl stood out to me the most. I worked with her the very first day and she was a little shy at first. Even though I wasn’t a part of her group all week, she still came up to me to show me her work as she had formed a connection with me and enjoyed every time I was proud of her progress. On the last day of classes she stayed by my side during her recess and gave me a kiss on the cheek before I left the school after the day was over.
If you ever have the opportunity to take a trip like this, I highly recommend it as it is a great way to learn more about yourself while being cut off from the social media/outside world.
