Social media has given the general public access to a vast quantity of information as well as news stories. The general person can now be informed about the happenings around the world that, without social media and the internet in general, would not have reached their awareness.
Before social media and generalized access to the internet, people had to rely on newspapers and television to get their information. This old way limited the public view of the world, giving the government and major corporations control of what everyone could see, meaning only what they wanted the people to know.
In today’s online world, it’s harder to hide information and news stories. It’s made media more democratic. People who use social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook or even more informal sites like Instagram or Tumblr now have the ability to share content with their followers or friends and then those friends and followers can share it to theirs and so on.
The world today is very connected and, personally, I think it’s a good thing when it comes to news coverage. I want to hear what’s happening across the world, I want to be aware of the good and the bad.
Do you believe social media networks have made media more democratic?
