The young people of today are very naïve – they believe that social media is everything and the world revolves around it. They were born into a world of internet connectivity and believe that instantaneously is how everything in the world should happen. When there’s something going on in the world, they’re so used to turning to their social media to figure out the facts and they believe that the newscast is dead. I believe that the traditional media is still the powerhouse in creating public awareness and fostering a societal change.
From a younger person's perspective it might seem like the classic radio and television are outdated and not as useful as they once were. 30 years ago, those were the powerhouses of communication, letting citizens know what was going on near them as well as around the world. The only way the younger individuals of today would probably be tempted to watch a newscast would probably be through the social media they use. However, for a true global reach, I believe that newscasts via radio and television are still the news powerhouses.
When you’re watching something to be informed about a current situation, you’re almost 9 times out of 10 going to be watching a newscast. The way that the newscast is being shared is what’s changing. That’s why I believe that the newscast is still the most powerful way to influence a societal change. The original story is shared on the news, but spread through social media.
