Let’s face it, it’s getting harder to advertise. With things like Netflix, DVRs, and Ad Block, we can skip, and outright block, advertisements in our entertainment and articles. So why are we surprised to learn companies sometimes sponsor those articles on websites?
Many perpetrators of these sponsored news articles are on light-hearted “news” sites, such as Buzzfeed and Gawker. Are the people who go to these sights searching for “hard news”? As someone who frequents these sites, I am not surprised. I am looking for entertainment, to get away from the harsh world.
It’s also not as if these articles are hiding their intent. Many of the sponsored news articles are branded with the word “sponsored” somewhere in the article. And if you think about it, is this any different than product placement in television and movies? Where can advertisers reach their audience if not through these avenues?
