I believe the future of communications lies in personal advertising. Personal advertising trends have been on the rise through mediums such as Facebook and Twitter over the last few years and I imagine we haven’t seen the end of them. Although currently all the ads do is monitor browsing history and place ads that are suitable to the searchs, I see the future having more in-depth behaviour monitoring allowing for ads that will call you by name and sell their product in a much more personal manner.
The only issue worth noting with this is the obvious negative stigma associated with personalized marketing, that is the invasion of privacy. The NSA was recently in the hot seat due to their monitoring for security concerns; with only personal marketing replacing security concerns, it will be much harder to defend their case. If there is a way for these marketing companies to beat this stigma I can see no other type of marketing that will be able to out-shine this advertising. The fact that almost everyone is connected to the internet at any given time through smart phones, laptops, watches and glasses supports this possibility. I believe direct marketing is the future of communications. In every home and phone, the ads will know your name, style, and age. While effective, this possibility is also worrisome.
