Entering the world of college isn’t as scary as it sounds. Sure, it’s a big step in your life, but once you’ve decided on a career path, fear turns into excitement. In my experience, college is a great place filled with opportunities. However, I wasn’t so sure at first. I was once a student who saw more value in going to university. Truth is, the past two years at Canadore, I have learnt more that I would have at any university, and here’s why:
1: Smaller Classes
Having 100 students in a university class is considered a small group; well, try cutting that number in half, and then cutting that in half again. That number would be considered a large class in my program. What’s wonderful about having such a small group is that you really get to know your classmates and your Profs. You can have more in-depth discussions with each other and maintain an ongoing relationship with everyone. You’re able to learn at whatever pace you need, while having others around you to help.
2: Working Opportunities
As a student at Canadore, I have many on-campus job opportunities. Working on campus is an easy and extremely convenient way to earn some extra cash while in school. During my final year at Canadore I was fortunate enough to work at the Canadore Alumni Office. In this job, I was able to meet so many incredible people at the College, learn from these people, and gain future references.
3: Hands On
As many already know, college is more of a hands-on form of learning. It allows you to experience and learn real life situations. By working with real businesses you develop a strong understanding of the field, build a stronger resume and can even develop new connections. A book can only teach so much; actually going out and applying what you learn is what makes you that much more prepared.
University is perceived as a higher form of education, yet this isn’t accurate. Everyone has a different way of learning. I’m not trying to put down universities, I just want people to know that whatever school you choose is the right choice. Education is education and as long as you’re willing to learn, you will do well.
